What will be the number of new unicorns globally in 2024?

In the past year, there were 171 new unicorns in the world, with a new unicorn being born almost every two days.

Among them: 70 are in the United States , 56 are in China, and 45 are in other parts of the world .

Number of unicorns by country

The number of unicorn companies in the world reached 1,453 , an increase of 7%, or 92, from last year. Among them:

The United States leads the way with 703 unicorns, an increase of 37, accounting for 48% of the global total;

China ranked second with 340 companies , an increase of 24;

India remained third with 67 companies , down by one;

The United Kingdom ranked fourth with 53 companies , an increase of 4;

There are 109 companies in the EU , an increase of 5.

Fastest growing industries

Fintech, artificial intelligence, blockchain and new energy were the fastest growing industries in the past year.

Overall, fintech leads with 185 unicorns, followed by software services ( 139 ) and artificial intelligence ( 115 ).

China's unicorns mainly come from the artificial intelligence, semiconductor and new energy industries.

American unicorns mainly come from software services, financial technology and artificial intelligence.

Unicorns in the rest of the world are mainly from fintech and e-commerce.

Fastest growing cities

San Francisco, with 190 unicorns, retains its title as the world’s unicorn capital and is the fastest growing city in the world, adding nine. New York is second with 133 unicorns, and Beijing is third with 78.

Singapore was the second fastest growing city, adding eight to reach 17.

Hefei is the fastest growing Chinese city, followed by Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Suzhou, and Nanjing, which has re-entered the top 30.

Guangzhou ranks in the top ten with 24 companies, 2 more than last year.

There are 70 unicorns in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, 7 more than last year.

Unicorns incubated by 21 state-owned enterprises

21 unicorns incubated by state-owned enterprises made the list, all from China:

Led by Guangzhou-based new energy vehicle company GAC Aion , valued at 100 billion yuan;

Next is the new energy vehicle Lantu, built by Dongfeng Motor with its headquarters in Wuhan , valued at RMB 30.5 billion;

Zhiji Auto, a new energy vehicle company headquartered in Shanghai and jointly developed by SAIC, Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park and Alibaba ;

And Jetta Semiconductor, headquartered in Shanghai and built by HuaDa Semiconductor , is valued at 30 billion yuan.

Last year, 18 unicorns went public in China

China had 18 unicorns go public in the past year, far exceeding the 5 in the United States and 6 in the rest of the world.

2.7% of last year’s list, or 37 unicorns, were “upgraded” and exited the list after going public or being acquired.

The most successful IPOs were Jitu Express, an Indonesia-based delivery partner of Pinduoduo, and Lotus, a luxury electric car maker headquartered in China .

The largest unicorn IPO in the U.S. was delivery company Instacart , which is currently worth half of its unicorn valuation.
