Infineon Technologies has launched the affordable, low-power tuner integrated circuit Taifun TUA6039. TUA6039 integrates RF (radio frequency) and IF (intermediate frequency) functions on a single chip, ushering in a new era of high-performance, low-cost and miniaturized digital TV tuner integrated circuits. The TUA6039 is only half the size of a conventional RF+IF tuner. This highly integrated IC provides a reliable solution for tuner, set-top box and TV manufacturers. It occupies only half the board area and consumes half the power of the previous generation. Therefore, for customers who are still using Infineon's two-chip solution consisting of TUA6034 (RF multimedia tuner) and TDA6192 (IF amplifier), TUA6039 is an ideal upgrade product. Under the fierce market competition, TUA6039 manufactured by bipolar semiconductor process is very suitable for fixed broadcast receivers that attach importance to cost and power consumption. TUA6039 is a three-band RF tuner integrated circuit with intermediate frequency AGC (automatic gain control) amplifier and phase-locked loop (PLL). This low-power tuner integrated circuit operates at 3 to 5 volts and consumes only 330mV (typical), which is much lower than the 600mW of similar competing products. The extremely high integration not only improves the economy of the tuner, but also shortens the development cycle and speeds up the time to market. TUA6039 supports all analog and digital formats used in terrestrial and cable television, such as PAL, SECAM, NTSC, DVBC, DVB-T, T-DMB, DAB, ISDB-T and ATSC, etc. The operating voltage of the tuner IC is 3 to 5 volts, which allows tuner manufacturers to flexibly set the tuner IC according to different receiving system power requirements. Since the tuner IC supports built-in standby mode and bus-controlled power saving mode, the overall system power consumption is further reduced. Availability TUA6039 samples in Green PG-VQFN-48 package are available now, and mass production is expected in the third quarter of 2006. At the same time, Infineon has begun to provide various TUA6039 TV tuner reference designs to help customers reduce product development costs and shorten product launch time. For portable applications requiring ultra-low power consumption, Infineon has begun to supply the recently released TUA6041/TUA6045 tuner ICs manufactured using BiCMOS technology.
