In memory of Stephen Hawking, two immortal popular science masterpieces left by a great man: A Brief History of Time [Copy link]

Two great works left by Hawking: "A Brief History of Time" and "The Universe in a Nutshell".
On March 14, Hawking passed away peacefully at his home in Cambridge at the age of 76. He is one of the greatest scientists alive today, as well as a cosmologist, astronomer, mathematician and writer. His book "A Brief History of Time" has sold more than 10 million copies so far, making it the best-selling science book in history. According to the American Broadcasting Corporation, Hawking became one of the most recognized people in the scientific community during his lifetime, and his status is comparable to that of Einstein.

Far inferior to Einstein. Einstein's theory (and the giants of the same period) changed the entire physics community and even the development of modern science, and his achievements in physics are comparable to Newton. It is true that Hawking is a scientist. As a physicist, if he does not prove something, can he still be called a physicist? However, his status and role are best known for two popular science books, which clearly distinguish him from Einstein. There is no need to infinitely magnify his role and status because of physical inspiration. Although Newton was not a very good person according to records, he founded physics and independently invented calculus. Such achievements are enough to dominate the two fields of physics and mathematics. Compared with the giants, Hawking is worthy of being recorded in history books, but his status is not worth mentioning. Maybe even Galois, who died in a duel at the age of 21, is more important than him.

I agree with Uncle Fu's point of view. I don't understand this advanced special science, so I won't comment on it.  Details Published on 2018-3-15 15:08

In fact, Hawking's greatness does not lie in his black hole theory. It happens to be his two popular science books. Physics has developed to the point where scientists are entertaining themselves. We can't feel what they have done. It is great to let ordinary people understand modern physics and change people's views on the universe.

They should be called great popular science masters:lol Popular science is limited to the times, because science is constantly developing. To have enough status to be called a master, one must have achievements that transcend the times, such as Fourier, calculus, quantum mechanics, etc. Scientists, especially those in mathematics and physics, have always been in small circles and groups for self-entertainment. Ordinary people have never felt anything, and ordinary people don't need to feel anything. What is the use of changing people's views on the universe? No, it is useless. You can neither transform the universe nor indulge in studying the universe; attracting children to learn physics? That is even more ridiculous. High-intelligence things like mathematics and physics only need geniuses. Children with geniuses do not need guidance. Children who are not geniuses will become academic hooligans if they are guided. :lolFrom a horizontal perspective of history, is there any great scientist who achieved great achievements because of interest, inspiration or encouragement? No. There are, and they are also Chen Jinrun and Hua Luogeng. For ordinary people, the 99% of sweat is not important at all.

Uncle Fu doesn’t know me either, but I never bargain for the boards I love, and I just hang them up or give them away casually for the boards I don’t love.  Details Published on 2018-3-15 15:33

{:1_133:}, the in-depth theory needs a longer time to be applied in reality. From the discovery of electromagnetic effect to the generator, to the application of radio communication, it took a lot of time. Human energy is limited. Now too extensive and deep basic research consumes a lot of human resources. In terms of the depth of modern science, it is difficult for humans to apply many theoretical research to life before extinction. This is almost the feeling of physicists entertaining themselves. Quantum mechanics has been around for nearly 120 years. So far, its application is still limited to the most basic stage of quantum computers and communications. That is, it took about 10 years from the discovery of electromagnetism to the first application of generators, 40 years to radio electromagnetic waves, 80 years to wireless communications, and 150 years to modern communications. The first stage of quantum mechanics has been around for nearly 120 years, and the second stage has been around for at least 240 years. This kind of research results may exceed the practical significance of human beings. Just like an intelligent robot, it is not good to be too stupid, but if productivity develops to the point where intelligence overloads the human brain, then the technological progress at that time will have no practical significance. For example, the first stage is when the computer takes some time to respond to your instructions when you press the mouse. The second stage is when the computer directly executes your instructions when you press the mouse. The third stage is when you imagine it, the intelligence has completed the execution. The fourth stage is when humans have not yet imagined it, the intelligence has been prepared for you. The third stage will be the limit of human technology. I feel that many scientific theories have reached their limit of application and should be stopped. The fourth stage has lost its meaning for humans. If quantum computers reach unprecedented heights, due to their extremely high quantum computing power, the errors caused by their own operation will exceed all barriers that humans can imagine, and they will spontaneously generate intelligence that is higher than human intelligence.
