SFAX is a family of chips that are designed to support soft embedded FAX
applications for MFP and FAX machine. The family includes two devices:

n
SFAX34: Soft embedded V.34 FAX chipset
SFAX17: Soft embedded V.17 FAX chipset

DTE interface:
– Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI)
The SFAX devices support a SPI interface which provides the interface between the embedded
processor and the modem chip set. It provides interfaces to the CSP1040 Codec, the T38 voice
codec for handset and speakerphone applications and the call progress speaker circuit.
The chipset would be used in conjunction with Soft Modem code running on the System’s
embedded processor to implement the complete FAX function including modulation speeds up to
V.34 and the T.30 protocol stack.

Single 3.3V supply with 5V tolerant I/O
Supports all CSP1040 features and allows a
single world-wide hardware design
LSI Soft FAX modem supports:
– V.34 and lower Fax rates
– T.32 Command Set (T.30 w/ECM)
– World-wide caller ID
– Handset, speakerphone and TAM (with T38
audio codec)
– Supports proprietary OS’s with RTOS-
independent architecture

SFAX/CSP1040 System Overview
The LSI SFAX34/17 chip set is a two-chip solution consisting of an LSI SFAX34/17 modem controller and a CSP1040 DAA. The SFAX34/17 devices support
FAX modes with rates up to 33.6 Kpbs. The SFAX device is available in a 24-pin MLCC suitable for most applications. A 48-pin TQFP is also available for pin
compatibility to the CFAX and DP3 chipsets. Figure 1 shows a typical application using a SFAX34 modem controller along with CSP1040 silicon DAA to
add FAX capability to a system.
