SIX STEPS
TO THE RIGHT PRODUCT
The choice of enclosure often depends
on the field of application and/or
market segment. Does your product
require a door, shelves, slide rails or a
support arm for a monitor? Is ease of
access important? Do you require
cooling for your components,
redundancy or electromagnetic
1. APPLICATION
shielding? Many details are required to
enable you to select the correct
enclosure. You can find more technical
information about electromagnetic
compatibility on page 12.6.
2. ENVIRONMENT
Environmental conditions are perhaps
the most important factor when
selecting the correct enclosure.
Is it intended for use in, say,
telecommunications, industry,
measurement and control,
infrastructure or security systems,
or as a data communications system?
You should also consider the main
challenges the enclosure will face,
such as:
- electromagnetic radiation
- shock and vibration
- corrosion
- the required loading capacity
- dust or sand
- fire
- extreme temperatures
- low atmospheric pressure
Deciding these considerations
simplifies the choice of the best
product for your needs. You can
find further information in the
appendix on pages 12.3-12.6
3. STANDARDS
Select an enclosure that satisfies the
required standard of protection for the
environment and application in
question. The evaluation criteria of
protection classes such as NEMA, UL,
cUL, Telcordia GR-487, CSA, DIN, VDE,
GOST, RoHS, CE, IEC, EN, NFF, BN,
IEEE, PICMG and VITA are a measure of
the capability of an enclosure to
withstand specific environmental
conditions. Note however that these
protection classes differ from one
another in important aspects. Further
technical information is available in the
appendix on pages 12.1-12.7 and in our
Standards Summary brochure, which
you can order from our website
www.schroff.biz/catalogues.

4. SIZE
Several factors must be considered
when specifying the size of the
enclosure. What materials should it
be built from? Where in the enclosure
will the assemblies be fitted?
Will you be installing devices on a
mounting plate? Will you be fitting
operating elements to a door? Does your
application have specific requirements
for the location of the enclosure?
5. MATERIAL
Select the most suitable material for
your product, taking into consideration
the potential environmental risks and
possible contamination by harmful
substances against which you must
protect the enclosure.
– steel
– stainless steel
– aluminum
– fiberglass
– ABS
– polycarbonate
– polyester
We will then help you select the most
suitable surface finish:
– electroplating
– hot-dip galvanizing
– passivation
– anodization
– paint (various compositions)
Further technical information is
available in the appendix on pages
12.4-12.5 and in our Standards
Summary brochure (pages 26-33),
which you can order from our website
www.schroff.biz/catalogues.
6. THERMAL MANAGEMENT
Faster and more powerful assemblies
produce ever more waste heat.
Effective thermal management is
therefore important to ensure optimum
efficiency and service life for the
electronic components. While in most
cases the central task is to monitor and
dissipate the heat generated, there are
also circumstances in which heating is
necessary. Some basic questions for
determining the appropriate cooling
method for your application include:
Which enclosure surfaces allow heat
transfer?
How much heat is generated by each
installed component?
What temperature conditions must be
observed?
Will your application be used in a
closed room or out of doors?
Will the cooling device be fitted on the
top, the side or within the enclosure?
With the help of your Schroff contact,
select the most suitable cooling
solution from our wide product range
in section 4. You will also find more
solutions on the Pentair McLean
website www.mcleancoolingtech.com
or in the McLean catalog, in the
"McLean V-Series" and "McLean
Thermoelectric Coolers" brochures
and in the main Pentair Hoffman
catalog, which you can order from
www.schroff.biz/catalogues.
