Hermaphroditic Product Features
Product Description:
Hermaphroditic connectors are designed to allow intermat-
ing of "like connectors" used on cable assembly ends. This
is achieved by converting one of the cable end's plug con-
nectors to a male connector configuration by backing off its
coupling nut and exposing its male threaded end and then
bringing the other connector (female configuration) coup-
ling nut forward to thread onto the exposed male threads.
This allows the cable assemblies to be deployed without
concern for having a male or a female connector at the
cable ends. Another benefit to the hermaphroditic connec-
tor design is that it allows identical cable assemblies to be
concatenated (linked together in series) as many times as

due to improper mating. Since mating instructions can not
be practically attached to each connector, it is critical that
"field use" connectors include "blind mating" and "scoop
proofing" design features to assure successful field applica-
tion. Packard-Hughes hermaphroditic connector design fea-
tures include both "blind mating" and "scoop proofing"
capabilities.
EMI/RFI Shielding:
Fiber optic cable assemblies and connectors do not require
shielding. When it is necessary to provide shielding for the
"electronics" inside the panel or the shelter which the recep-
tacle mounts onto, special versions of Packard-Hughes
receptacle connectors are available. These connectors can
be grounded to the panels using conductive surfaces and
gaskets or by a metallic shroud that can be added over the
rear of the connector (inside the enclosure). For further

Design Features for Typical Field Abuse:
Field use connectors experience application abuse that is
over and above the environmental conditions that are
normally seen by connectors and cable assemblies. These
potentially damaging conditions include being run-over by
wheeled and tracked vehicles, using the connectors
protruding from the shelter or panels as foot or hand holds,
application in wet conditions including freezing water, etc.
Packard-Hughes hermaphroditic connectors have been
designed to withstand crush, cable tensile pull-out, cable
twist, external bending moment, impact, freezing water, and
many other field application abuses.

Optical Performance Data
The average insertion loss is .5dB for ceramic termini, and
.8dB for stainless steel termini (both 62.5 micron core, but
other core size data is also available). These figures are
derived from actual field measurements taken from thousands
of mated pairs of termini across our line of multichannel
connectors. The measurements included multiple cycles of
mating and unmating using many types of cable and
brands of fiber. The source launch wavelengths were 850
and 1300 nanometers. Single mode performance data
