Description
The Thermo-Fuse Varistor (TVZ) is a family of Transient Voltage Surge Suppression products. TVZ is
a three-lead Thermally Protected Metal Oxide Varistor. One lead of the TVZ varistor is connected to a
thermal fuse, which will open when the varistor is subjected to prolonged abnormal over-voltage conditions.
Traditionally, the Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) can withstand 150% of its rated voltage for a given
duration. Typically, an MOV will initially fail to a short-circuit condition or fail open when subjected to
sustained steady-state over-voltage conditions that exceed rated specifications.
The TVZ incorporates a thermal fuse with an MOV. The TVZ will respond to prolonged over-voltage
conditions by disconnecting the MOV from the power source should the temperature exceed a certain level.
Therefore, the TVZ provides “Fail Safe” protection to sensitive downstream components.
