AutoBaud Technology
AutoBaud technology consists of an enhanced set of SDSL device
drivers that greatly enhances the connection process between
DSL transceivers from different manufacturers. It establishes
connections automatically at the fastest data rate that a given
connection can support as well as with the appropriate Layer 2
technology. AutoBaud has been endorsed by and integrated into
products by a broad base of more than 40 DSL industry leaders.
As such, it functions as the “Autobahn” of DSL connectivity.
™
Key Benefits
AutoBaud reduces connection setup time by automatically
determining the maximum data rate that can be supported on
a specific loop. By predetermining the correct data link layer,
AutoBaud enables ready interoperability between different DSL
equipment manufacturers. AutoBaud supports a wide range
of SDSL data rates — everything from 144 Kbps to 2.3 Mbps,
in 8 Kbps increments.
How AutoBaud Works
Pre-Activation
• AutoBaud probes the link and determines the loop
characteristics, including line noise and attenuation
• AutoBaud determines the maximum speed that the link
will support
• AutoBaud negotiates the correct Layer 2 protocol (direct cell,
framed cell, and direct packet)
• AutoBaud negotiates the best speed that is supported on both ends
Post-Activation (Optional)
• AutoBaud sets up a communications channel
• Line characteristics including noise margin, far-end attenuation,
SNR and BER are exchanged
• The connection speed is fine-tuned
Distinguishing Features
• Greatly reduces connect times
• Eliminates most provisioning requirements
• Always makes the highest-speed
connection the line will support
• Identifies appropriate Layer 2 technology
to the CPE prior to synchronization
• Easy to implement
• Distributed without charge

Obtaining AutoBaud Technology
The AutoBaud algorithm is integrated into Conexant’s ZipWire device
drivers and replaces the previous set. Integration is eased since only
a small set of files has been changed, thus limiting the impact to
previously-released products.
