About Tuning Antennas for Minimum VSWR . . .
To obtain the most efficiency from a radio system, proper tuning of the
antenna and transmission line to the radio set is required. To do so, an
RF wattmeter or VSWR bridge (oscilloscope) is needed. For a stainless
steel whip, the adjustment may be made by moving the whip up and
down in its set screw adapter. If the whip needs to be shortened, score
the whip with a grinding wheel or file, then snap the whip in two at the
score mark. If only small amounts are to be cut, use a grinding wheel.
After the correct length is determined, grind a flat spot in the rod on
which the set screw may seat.
