Ultra-Fast, 2-phase DDR Termination
Switching Regulator
Description
The 88PD830 offers a unique solution to applications
requiring extremely fast transient response. Ideally suited
for termination of Double Data Rate (DDR) SDRAM
memory. In addition, it reduces the amount of output
capacitance required compared to previous solutions,
lowers output ripple and improves efficiency.
The 88PD830 is a two-phase synchronous buck-switching
regulator. Each output operates out of phase with a
precise 50% duty-cycle control, ideally suited to divide the
input voltage by half. With symmetrical alternating half
cycles, ripple current cancellation is achieved in both the
input and output capacitor banks as well as lowering
overall noise. The two-phase magnetic coupling structure
yields the simplest and smallest transformer because it
only requires one primary and secondary turn and no
energy is stored in the transformer.
In traditional synchronous buck converters the inductance
remain the same under all operating conditions; however,
with Marvell two-phase topology, the transformer
inductance will be significantly reduced during transient
conditions. Thus faster transient response can be
achieved without sacrificing output ripple or efficiency.
