Introduction to Microchip MOST150 OS81118AF Intelligent Network Interface Controller (INIC)

Microchip Technology Inc. announced the release of the latest MOST® Cooperation coaxial physical layer specification for its MOST150 technology. With the release of this new industry standard specification, Microchip can connect its smart antenna modules to automotive MOST150 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and infotainment networks via the OS81118AF Intelligent Network Interface Controller (INIC) equipped with an integrated coaxial transceiver. The market increasingly demands smart antenna telematics systems and other data traffic from AM/FM, DAB, SDARS, DVB-T, 3G/LTE, GPS, and Wi-Fi® signals to automotive networks for high-bandwidth control, audio, video, and Internet Protocol (IP)-based communication. The MOST150 coaxial physical layer is an ideal choice for this purpose. Furthermore, using mature, low-cost coaxial cables to simultaneously provide communication signals and power to these automotive systems simplifies design and installation, reduces costs and vehicle weight, and better meets various environmental regulations.

With the OS81118AF, designers can connect to smart antenna modules via coaxial cables to create in-vehicle mobile and Wi-Fi® connectivity applications based on the MOST150 network. This simple and convenient solution caters to the current automotive market's demand for wireless connectivity applications such as internet access, email, social networking, and location/GPS-based services. MOST150 technology was successfully deployed in the first vehicle model in 2012, and the first vehicles using the coaxial physical layer technology of MOST150 are planned for market launch in 2017. Since 2001, more than 180 vehicle models have been equipped with over 150 million MOST devices. This coaxial deployment solution for smart antenna modules offers excellent value for money and has a wide range of market applications, and is expected to further promote the adoption of MOST technology in the automotive market.
