Power Integrations releases InnoSwitch3 GaN-based AC-DC converter IC
SAN JOSE, Calif.,

– Power Integrations (Nasdaq:
POWI
), a leader in high-voltage integrated circuits for energy-efficient power conversion, today announced
the latest additions to its InnoSwitch™ 3 family of constant-voltage/constant-current offline flyback switcher ICs. These new ICs deliver 95% efficiency across the entire load range and can deliver 100 W of power without a heatsink in enclosed adapters. This breakthrough performance is achieved using in-house developed high-voltage gallium nitride switch technology.
The quasi-resonant InnoSwitch3-CP, InnoSwitch3-EP, and InnoSwitch3-Pro ICs integrate primary, secondary, and feedback circuitry in a single surface-mount package. In these newly released devices, conventional high-voltage silicon transistors on the IC's primary side are replaced with gallium nitride switches, which reduces conduction losses during current flow and significantly reduces switching losses during operation. This ultimately helps significantly reduce the power supply's energy consumption, thereby improving efficiency and enabling greater output power to be delivered from a smaller InSOP-24D package.
The new ICs provide precise constant voltage/constant current/constant power without external components and easily work with fast-charging protocol interface ICs, making them suitable for high-efficiency flyback designs such as USB-PD and high-current chargers/adapters for mobile devices, set-top boxes, monitors, home appliances, networking equipment, and gaming consoles. The power supply characteristics of the InnoSwitch3-CP and InnoSwitch3-EP can be configured by changing hardware parameters, while the InnoSwitch-Pro integrates an advanced digital interface that enables software control of constant voltage and constant current set points, exception handling, and safety mode options.
Balu Balakrishnan, President and CEO of Power Integrations, said:
Power Integrations' new InnoSwitch 3 ICs are available now. Five new reference designs for USB-PD chargers with output power ranging from 60 W to 100 W are available on the Power Integrations website. The automated design tool, PI Expert ™, and other technical support documentation are also available.
