This circuit uses the raw current from a small 6.3V filament transformer to drive a triac and provide energy to the load. When switch S1 is in the 6V secondary winding of the transformer, a small magnetizing current flows through the primary winding. This magnetizing current may be large enough to trigger the triac. Therefore, a shunt resistor R1 needs to be used to prevent triggering from occurring.
