What is the AS5200L rotary magnetic position sensor? What does it do? ams, the world's leading provider of high-performance sensor solutions, today launched the AS5200L. This dual-channel rotary magnetic position sensor with I2C interface is a new space-saving design for safety-critical automotive applications.

With AEC-Q100 Level 1 qualification, the AS5200L expands ams’ magnetic position sensor portfolio with unique features for drive-by-wire functions in electrical powertrain systems, such as conventional gear levers and Shift-by-wire with rotary shifter, pedal application and more.

ams has always been known for its reliable and high-performance position sensing technology. The use of dual die makes the performance of AS5200L even further. The stacked structure of the die means it can be paired with a single smaller magnet while delivering consistent measurement output for each channel. Each die has separate package pins to prevent device electrical failures from affecting both dies.

Like all ams magnetic position sensors, the AS5200L is immune to stray magnetic fields and provides highly accurate and repeatable measurements even in noisy magnetic environments. Without the need for additional shielding typically required with other magnetic position sensor ICs, extremely reliable performance is achieved and system cost can be reduced.

AS5200L is packaged in MLF-16 and occupies only 5mm x 5mm, saving space. Meanwhile, exposed pads and wettable side plates enable quick and easy board-level solder joint inspection. For automotive system design engineers who need to accurately design space-constrained vehicle electrification applications (such as shifters and pedals) or various other non-contact potentiometer applications (such as knobs and joysticks) For reliable rotational position detection, the AS5200L is the ideal choice.

The I2C interface allows easy and fast programming of relevant parameters via the host microcontroller, eliminating the need for a specialized programmer. AS5200L provides I2C interface or PWM signal output angle signal, using 12-bit resolution. The maximum error caused by inherent nonlinearity does not exceed

±1°.

The AS5200L consumes very little power in both normal operation and standby modes. Intelligent low-power mode automatically reduces power consumption, so the average current during inspection every 100ms is only 1.5mA.

By default, the sensor measures rotation angles from 0° to 360°. By setting the start and stop positions in the chip's one-time programmable (OTP) memory, a smaller angle range can be set based on user needs.

Thomas Mueller, Marketing Director Position Sensors at ams, said: “The AS5200L is ideally suited for safety-critical embedded automotive applications where high accuracy, redundancy and ultra-small size are required. Equipped with redundant The dual-channel AS5200L with 12-bit high-resolution I²C or PWM output is ideal for shift-by-wire applications in hybrid, electric and conventional vehicles. Due to its excellent performance and dual-channel redundancy, the AS5200L can help Automobile manufacturers meet ASIL D level requirements at the system level." The above is the analysis of the AS5200L rotating magnetic position sensor, I hope it can be helpful to everyone.
