ZiLOG Megacells
•
16-bit synchronous auto-reload STOP mode
idle-timer clocked from a 9-bit prescaler that
uses the 32-KHz crystal oscillator frequency as
its source to minimize stop mode current
•
Alarm and sensor control/detection either by
software polling, or by custom state machine
logic driven at 32-KHz active during STOP
mode
•
Software register selectable OOK 63-chip or
CCSK symbol code sequencer
•
Modulation signals for the RF circuitry
•
Half of the PLL used for RF carrier generation
(Frequency divider, Phase detector). The other
half of the PLL (VCO, Prescaler) located exter-
nally to the Z87024 in the RF circuitry
•
EEPROM interface which supports synchronous
communications using custom registers and
general-purpose I/O ports (P20, P21, P22)
•
Register selectable 32 KHz square wave output
for RF voltage boost logic
•
14-MHz reference frequency output for stand-
alone RF designs
Low Power Modes
•
Embedded ZiLOG Z86C43 8-bit microcontrol-
ler with watch-dog timer and two 8-bit program-
mable timer/counters
•
236-byte general-purpose RAM with an addi-
tional 128-byte RAM located externally to the
core in program space (The RAM can be used as
data RAM or executable RAM.)
•
12 KB internal ROM with provisions for 16 KB
external ROM
Low-power modes are HALT and STOP Modes.

•
Halt Mode is defined as a mode where the 14-
MHz clock is running but the Processor Core is
turned OFF.
•
STOP Mode is defined as a mode where the 14-
MHz clock is turned off and the ASIC custom
logic is clocked by the 32-KHz crystal oscilla-
tor.
OFF During Low Power Modes
When a block of logic is declared OFF, it is still
powered and the registers still maintain their val-
ues, but none of the flip-flops are clocked. The
function of the block is lost, but the data is
retained. When an analog block is declared OFF,
no current is consumed.
Instruction Set
•
The reference voltage function has been moved
internal to the ASIC.
•
The state machine and 32-KHz oscillator have
been changed to reduce current drain in STOP
Mode for battery operation.
•
SENSOR_ENA and SENSOR_ENB are now
tristate outputs.
•
The functions of comparators A and B have
been swapped.
General Description
Core and information for Op Codes (operational
codes) is found in the Z86C43 Product Specifica-
tion (DS97Z8X1201).
Backward Compatibility
The Z87024 is functionally compatible with all
Z87022-based electric and battery endpoint
designs with the following differences:
•
Input voltage restrictions MUST be followed on
the PLL_IN, RF_EN and RF_KEY signal pins.
ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection has
been reduced to improve circuit headroom.
•
Custom registers and bit functions have been
rearranged
•
The reset pin function has moved to a different
pin, and includes an internal pull-up resistor.
The Z87024 is a microcontroller used in radio
transmitters to send meter data over a wireless net-
work. The Z87024 microcontroller is a digital
ASIC that when combined with RF circuitry, oper-
ates as a radio transmitter that operates in the 900-
MHz unlicensed band. This is the same frequency
band allocated by the FCC for cordless phones.
The Z87024 microcontroller counts pulses from its
sensors and periodically sends the collected data
over the network.
Sensors connected to the Z87024 microcontroller
•
Provide pulse counting inputs
•
Provide signals that can trigger alarms
•
Provide signals that can trigger test modes
Installing a radio transmitter that uses a ZiLOG
Z87024 microcontroller eliminates manual meter
reading by providing automatic meter reading at
specific times. The Z87024 microcontroller can be
used to read various types of meters including elec-
tric meters, gas meters, water meters, parking
meters, and any pulse counting applications.
