AMD 2023-24 Corporate Responsibility Report: Advancing Sustainability, Collaboration, and Inclusion
— AMD Achieves Strategic Corporate Responsibility Goals by Reducing Carbon Emissions, Deepening Industry Collaboration, and Strengthening Employee Development Programs —
AMD recently released its annual Corporate Responsibility Report, detailing the company's progress in advancing its strategic corporate responsibility goals through 2023. AMD focuses on key issues that have the greatest impact on its business and societal development, and identifies these issues through an ESG materiality assessment, including environmental sustainability, digital impact, diversity, belonging and inclusion, and supply chain responsibility.
Highlights for 2023 include:
-
Through a holistic chip design approach centered around performance and energy efficiency, AMD offers a broad range of compute engines for end-to-end AI infrastructure. Innovations such as AMD's pioneering chiplet architecture can help address sustainability issues in both product applications and manufacturing. For example, the production of the 4th Gen AMD EPYC CPU utilizes up to 12 independent compute chiplets rather than a single die. By avoiding additional wafer manufacturing, this reduces approximately 132,000 metric tons of CO2e in 2023, equivalent to 2.8 times AMD's full-year 2023 operational CO2e footprint and 4.9 times its 2023 operational water consumption. AMD's goal to improve the energy efficiency of its processors and accelerators for HPC and AI training by 30x from 2020 to 2025 is progressing steadily. On the latest Green500 list, over half of the world's 50 most energy-efficient supercomputers are powered by AMD solutions.
-
AMD designs AI and high-performance computing solutions to help customers and partners solve the world's toughest challenges and achieve their sustainability goals. As AI becomes a primary workload, AMD solutions are helping data center operators modernize their infrastructure and address space and energy challenges. For example, a single 4th Gen EPYC-based server can replace five traditional servers, reducing rack space by 70% while lowering energy consumption by 65%.
-
AMD has reduced its operational carbon emissions by 24.5% since 2020. In 2023, 40% of AMD's energy procurement will come from renewable energy, an 18% increase from 2020. Within the supply chain, AMD's partner foundries will reduce their total water intake for wafer manufacturing by increasing their use of recycled water by 34% between 2022 and 2023.
-
Since 2020, more than 150 universities, research institutions, and nonprofit organizations have received AMD donated technology through the AMD AI and HPC Fund and STEM programs, benefiting approximately 61 million people through scientific research and education. As part of these actions, in 2023, AMD will donate to institutions engaged in research in AI and machine learning systems and applications, incorporating AI into scientific applications and various HPC and AI teaching and training programs.
-
AMD also continues to promote STEM education through the AMD Learning Lab program and has established a new lab at Maynooth University in Dublin, Ireland. In addition to providing technology and funding, AMD employees around the world provide guidance and hands-on learning opportunities for students through various projects and activities.
-
AMD encourages employees to do the work that has the greatest impact and provides opportunities for growth, engagement, and a sense of belonging. As a result of these efforts, 92% of employees in the 2023 AMD Employee Survey said that AMD creates an environment where people from all backgrounds can succeed.
-
In 2023, AMD launched Advancing Women in Technology, a comprehensive learning experience designed to empower, retain, and support women at AMD in technical roles. The program engaged more than 230 women in its first year and is expected to reach even more women in 2024.
-
In 2023, AMD employees around the world contributed more than 25,000 volunteer hours through individual and team activities.
-
AMD cultivates strong partnerships throughout its value chain and carefully selects manufacturing partners to advance human rights, environmental sustainability, and supply chain resilience. In 2023, AMD expanded its due diligence efforts to minimize adverse human rights impacts, including additional responsible mineral sourcing due diligence. In line with the company's goals, 84% of AMD's manufacturing suppliers underwent Responsible Business Alliance (RBA) audits between 2020 and 2023.
-
AMD continues to work with suppliers to expand education and resources on environmental and human rights issues.
