Centimeter-level positioning + intent prediction: How wireless sensing technology is ushering in a "seamless era"

As you walk towards your underground parking spot carrying shopping bags, your car lights subtly illuminate, and a welcome light carpet unfolds on the ground. As you approach, the driver's side door unlocks gently; at the rear, the trunk pops open automatically—no keys or phone required.

This is not a solo performance by a single technology, but a "symphony" jointly performed by wireless and sensing technologies such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, UWB, and IMU. They each perform their functions and work together to enable smart devices to accurately sense space, understand the scene, and even predict your intentions.

Location and wake-up

BLE's low-power "whisper"

This collaborative operation begins with Bluetooth Low Energy's "Whisper Wake-up". Like a guardian that is always on standby but consumes very little power, when a BLE-enabled mobile phone or smartwatch enters the vehicle's range of 10-30 meters, the vehicle and the device establish a micro-connection through continuous broadcast signals.

In the consumer electronics field, from wireless earphones and smart bracelets to smart door locks, BLE has long been a silent, unsung hero maintaining connectivity in the background. Its primary task is not precise positioning, but efficient identification and wake-up, telling the system: "An authorized user is approaching."

Precise ranging and spatial perception

"Centimeter-level dialogue" between UWB and Bluetooth channel detection

Once awakened by BLE, the system needs to know: "Where is the user? What does the user want to do?" This requires technology that can conduct conversations with centimeter-level precision.

Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology acts like a radar, measuring distance by calculating the time-of-flight of radio waves between two devices, achieving centimeter-level positioning accuracy. In automotive applications, it can accurately determine whether a user is standing near the driver's side door, passenger side door, or trunk, enabling seamless and secure door unlocking and personalized greetings; it can also effectively defend against relay attacks.

As a rising star in the Bluetooth family, Bluetooth Channel Probe (CS) technology offers a new path to high precision. It utilizes phase information from multiple channels for ranging, achieving accuracy from decimeters to centimeters. Its advantage lies in its ability to reuse existing Bluetooth hardware, enabling the widespread adoption of high-precision positioning capabilities across more devices at a lower cost.

Posture, Intention, and Seamless Switching

Contextual understanding of IMU and Wi-Fi

Once the precise location is known, the next step is to understand posture and intention. This is where the Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) comes into play. The IMU in a mobile phone or watch uses gyroscopes and accelerometers to sense whether you are walking, running, or raising your wrist to check your watch. Combined with location information, the system can determine that the user is heading towards the trunk, possibly carrying a heavy object.

Wi-Fi plays a dual role as a "high-speed data channel" and a "wide-range positioning anchor point." When you walk from your home to the garage, your phone seamlessly switches from the home Wi-Fi network to the vehicle's Wi-Fi hotspot; it can also assist in determining room-level location indoors, complementing BLE coarse positioning.

Application Concerto

From automobiles to intelligent integration across all scenarios

This collaborative logic is rapidly expanding from high-end automobiles to the entire consumer electronics and Internet of Things (IoT) field:

Smart Home: When you arrive at your front door with your phone, BLE wakes up the smart door lock, and UWB accurately determines your location to automatically open the door. Upon entering the living room, the Wi-Fi network automatically switches, the IMU senses your sitting motion, and the lighting automatically adjusts to a comfortable mode.

AR/VR and Indoor Navigation: In large shopping malls or museums, BLE beacons provide area wake-up and coarse positioning, UWB or Bluetooth CS achieve centimeter-level precision positioning or store navigation, and IMU ensures continuous attitude tracking.

Asset tracking and personnel management: In factories or warehouses, tags attached to important tools or assets broadcast their own status via BLE, report their precise location via UWB, and report whether they have been moved or dropped via IMU, enabling refined management of the entire process.

Creating a "transparent and seamless" core experience

The core goal of this technological symphony is to create an ultimate experience that is "transparent and seamless." In the future, technologies will further converge, potentially leading to single-chip solutions integrating multiple technologies, further reducing power consumption and cost. Simultaneously, edge AI will enable devices to locally process sensor fusion data, more intelligently learn user habits, and predict needs while protecting user privacy.

Taking the evolution of Bluetooth technology as an example, Bluetooth Channel Detection, a core new feature of Bluetooth 6.0, is ushering in a new era of centimeter-level precise positioning for traditional connectivity technologies. Avnet, together with its ecosystem partners, provides developers with full-stack support from chips to solutions. For example, Nordic Semiconductor's nRF54L15 series SoC and NXP Semiconductors' MCX W72/KW47 wireless MCU series optimized for automotive and industrial IoT both natively support this cutting-edge feature.

nRF54L15 Development Kit

Avnet not only provides hardware, but also helps developers solve key issues such as antenna configuration, power consumption optimization and core ranging algorithm integration through supporting SDKs, development toolkits and professional technical support, ensuring that their products achieve the best balance between interoperability and performance.

When technological collaboration reaches perfection, the experience becomes incredibly natural: space understands you, devices assist you, and you will be completely unaware of the complex interplay of technologies. This is the future that collaborative wireless sensing technologies point to—a more intelligent and seamless digital-physical convergence world.
