Last week, we introduced two PCB design tips, including Lin Chaowen's "Multilayer PCB Design Quick Guide" video and DigiKey's "PCB Design Tips Checklist," to help you avoid pitfalls. This week, we officially introduce DigiKey's online conversion calculator. With the right tools, PCB design becomes even easier, even for beginners.

4 essential tools at your disposal

DigiKey understands that one of the challenges of PCB design is the strict requirements for trace layout, and identifying components is a time-consuming process. Therefore, we provide you with four practical online tools to meet the needs of different stages, from PCB production to practice, speeding up the time for each step. Knowing even one of them could lead to losses!

  • PCB Trace Width Calculator - Uses formulas from the IPC-2221 standard to calculate the width of a copper printed circuit board conductor, or "trace," required to carry a given current while keeping the temperature rise of the trace below the specified limit.
  • IPC 2141 Trace Impedance Calculator – Helps simplify initial design. Includes seven common trace type options. Simply enter basic parameters to calculate impedance according to the IPC-2141 standard, reducing complex calculations.
  • Chip Resistor Code Calculator - Provides three code formats. Select the desired code format, then select the surface marking/silkscreen numbers or letters on the resistor to obtain the resistance value. Reverse search is also supported.
  • SMD Capacitor Code Calculator - This calculator works the same as the Chip Resistor Code Calculator, helping you search for capacitor values. It supports the EIA-198 part marking/silkscreen system.

How could such a practical tool only have a brief introduction? If you want to see the full content and usage instructions, click on the cover article of this issue, which includes wonderful explanations and teaching videos, so that you can master the usage more accurately and complete your PCB design more quickly.
