Beijing, China, January 23, 2015 – Tektronix, the world’s leading oscilloscope manufacturer, recently launched a complete set of USB3.1 compliance test solutions. Designers can use these solutions to quickly verify designs against the latest USB specifications. , enabling rapid product development cycles while minimizing costs. The new solution expands Tektronix's already comprehensive USB 3.1 and USB 2.0 test capabilities, including a new USB 3.1 receiver test solution supporting 10 Gb/s data rates, a new USB power output test solution and a new USB C Type cable testing solutions.

As speeds continue to increase, USB testing is far more complex than it used to be. Testing is critical to the success of USB 3.1 chip and product designs, which must meet performance expectations, be backward compatible with previous USB specifications, and interoperate smoothly with other low-cost USB products. In addition, USB3.1 designs must meet challenging new requirements, such as 128b/132b encoding, lower jitter budget, higher loss (possibly using integrated repeaters), and more complex equalization functions. Tektronix' new solution reduces the complexity of performing USB 3.1 compliance testing and also supports debugging and margin analysis.

“The latest version of USB 3.1 brings speed and a better user experience – faster data rates and faster product development cycles.” said Brian Reich, general manager of high-performance oscilloscopes at Tektronix. “With the latest solution, Tektronix will continue to Maintain market leadership and provide USB test solutions that enable our customers to quickly validate, characterize and debug designs with confidence and gain a competitive advantage."

    Automatic USB3.1 Receiver Testing

Receiver testing is now a must-have requirement for USB3.1 certification . Due to the faster data rates, it is critical to ensure that the receiver correctly interprets the incoming code stream. The new BSAUSB31 solution for Tektronix BERTScope bit error rate testers significantly simplifies receiver testing. End users no longer have to be USB experts. Processes such as defining test parameters, placing the device under test into the correct test mode, measuring bit errors, displaying results after each frequency is executed, and printing/storing test results are all fully automated, saving time and improving accuracy. The solution provides all signal impairments required by USB3.1, including SJ, RJ, SSC and signal attenuation for compliance test channels.

As one of the first adopters of USB 3.1, ASMedia has chosen Tektronix to provide test and measurement support. "With the help of Tektronix' advanced instrumentation and software, ASMedia's controllers, switches and other USB3.1 I/O products provide perfect electrical characteristics, achieving minimal jitter and very clear eye diagrams." Senior Vice President of Product Marketing Department of ASMedia President Weber Chuang said, "We strongly believe that it will provide a very stable and consistent link for host control, with perfect throughput even when using cascaded 3-meter USB 3.1 cables. The Tektronix tools were instrumental in helping us achieve this so quickly play a key role in achieving its own design goals.”

    USB power output test solutions

The need for USB power delivered over the cable has exceeded USB battery charging capabilities. The USB power output specification addresses this limitation and can deliver up to 100W at 20V in any direction. The new GRL-USB-PD software, developed by Tektronix with partner Granite River Labs, supports key physical layer tests detailed in Chapter 5 of the power output specification, including rise time/fall time, transmitter and receiver eye diagram templates, etc. In addition, the software provides pattern decoding of binary mark coding (BMC) signals, which can further complete debugging and analysis.

"The updated USB power delivery specification effectively completes the USB ecosystem and will open up a variety of interesting and up-to-date USB applications." said Mike Engbretson, principal technical engineer at GraniteRiverLabs. "Because USB power delivery is now more complex than in the past, GRL - Test solutions like USB-PD are critical to efficiently debug and verify new USB power output IC and system designs."

    USB Type-C Cable Test Solution

Introduced in August 2014 by the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) A symmetrical, reversible USB Type-C connector designed to complement existing USB cables and connectors. The new USB Type-C Cable Test Implementation Method (MOI) file can be downloaded from www.tektronix.com/USB. Recommended test instruments include a DSA8300 sampling oscilloscope, two 80E10BTDR modules, 80SSPAR IConnect S-parameter analysis software, Luxshare-ICT USB Type-C SI fixture kit and USB-IF signal integrity compliance test tools.

"USB3.1 achieves faster data rates of 10Gbps, coupled with the new USB Type-C cable design and upgraded USB power output specifications, USB is ready for long-term growth and deeper markets." USB -IF President and Chief Operating Officer Jeff Ravencraft said, "Without a strong ecosystem and the ability to ensure that products meet standards and perform reliably under a variety of conditions, none of this would happen. Tektronix provides complete testing solutions that have Widely accepted by the industry, it continues to make a significant contribution to the successful implementation of the USB specification."

    Pricing and Availability

The TekExpress USB 3.1 transmitter test solution (Option USBSSP-TX) is now available globally for 16 GHz and above High bandwidth Tektronix DPO/MSO70000 Series oscilloscopes. BSAUSB31 USB 3.1 receiver test software requires BSA125C or higher BERTScope. Please contact your Tektronix representative for pricing and additional details.
