My wife once wanted a mic - so I just made this one (if my wife saw it, maybe I would lose it www). It is a first-level NE5532 inverting amplifier, one button to cut off the output, and it is powered by a 9v battery.
The reason for using a mic amplifier instead of an ordinary mic directly connected to the PC audio input is that the signal-to-noise ratio of the software gain inside the PC is extremely low, and the use of external hardware amplification can reduce the power supply noise floor.
