SATA 6Gb/s to USB3.1 Gen1 - JMS578

Overview

0. There is an upgraded version of VL716 that converts SATA to TYPE-C. It is recommended to make the upgraded version
. Comparison of the upgraded version:
1. This project has no path management, and can only select 12V or 5V mode through jumpers. The new version is compatible with both and no jumpers are required.
2. The ripple of the hard disk in this project is large and unstable when working. The new version has optimized power supply and the ripple is smaller.
3. This project requires the VL160 chip to convert from TYPE-C to USB3. The new version of the main control integrates a TYPE-C controller, which costs less.
4. This project does not provide a shell, the new version provides an acrylic shell, and provides SW source projects, 3D, DXF, and panel files.

1. Introduction
JMS578 can convert SATA 6Gb/s (768MB/s) (theoretically) to USB3.1 Gen1, which can be used for SSD, HDD, ODD
VL160 can convert USB3.1 to TYPE-C USB3.1.
With 3.5-inch mechanical hard disk
With 2.5-inch mechanical hard disk
With solid-state hard disk
The power supply uses SCT2650's DCDC, with 12V and 5V path management.
This solution is compatible with solid-state drives, 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch mechanical hard disks, as detailed below.
2. SSD/2.5-inch/3.5-inch mechanical hard disk description
This solution is compatible with solid-state drives, 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch mechanical hard disks.
General solid-state drives and 2.5-inch mechanical hard disks are powered by 5V, and general 3.5-inch mechanical hard disks use 5V+12V dual power supply.
When using a solid-state drive or a 2.5-inch hard drive, you don't need a 12V power supply, only a 5V power supply is needed. Therefore, the following power supply part does not need to be welded. This power supply solution cannot drive a 3.5-inch hard drive without 12V.
As shown below:
The following figure shows that a 2.5-inch mechanical hard drive can be driven without welding the DCDC part of the circuit
. When using a 3.5-inch hard drive, this part of the power supply needs to be welded, and the power supply needs to be powered by a 12V adapter. It is also compatible with the 5V of a 2.5-inch hard drive. When welding,
please note that when using USB5V without welding DCDC, you need to weld 0 ohms or a fuse here
. When using a 12V power supply to weld DCDC, you do not need to weld here, just paste it blank.
Otherwise, the 5V of DCDC may flow back to the USB5V .
In actual personal tests, after welding DCDC, there is no backflow phenomenon when welding 0 ohms 5V here, but it is recommended to disconnect it.
3.Layout part
TYPE-C, USB3.0, USB2.0 part uses 90 ohm impedance, SATA part uses 100 ohm impedance
This design uses:

actual speed of different hard disks of different brands was tested
5.1 Seagate Galaxy X18 ST16000NM000J
Brand: Seagate Galaxy X18

Hard disk type: 3.5-inch mechanical hard disk Vertical disk
capacity: 16TB
Cache: 256M
Speed: 7200 rpm

new disk I just got a brand new disk, so I took this one to operate.
Using this tool, you can initialize the hard disk normally, create new partitions normally, format normally, and modify the volume label normally.
The speed in USB3 mode is OK, and both reading and writing can reach 250MB/s, which is the ceiling of the mechanical hard disk tested so far

Brand: Seagate Skyhawk
Model: ST4000VX007
Hard disk type: 3.5-inch mechanical hard disk Vertical disk
capacity: 4TB
Cache: 64M
Rotation speed: 5900 rpm
Use: 1 year
Reading speed is 160MB/s in USB3 mode
and writing speed is 88MB/s in USB3 mode
Considering that this disk is about to be full, the magnetic head is basically active in the inner circle of the disk, that is, the area with lower linear speed, and the speed is not as good as the writing speed of 120MB/s of the previous Seagate Skyhawk ST1000LM035 hard disk. Therefore, the unsatisfactory writing speed should be the reason why the hard disk is almost full.
5.4 Western Digital Blue Disk WD10EZEX
Brand: Western Digital Blue Disk
Model: WD10EZEX
Hard disk type: 3.5-inch mechanical hard disk Vertical disk
capacity: 1TB
Cache: 64M
Rotation speed: 7200 rpm
Use: 8 years
In USB3.0 mode, reading and writing are both above 100MB/s, which is quite satisfactory. Considering that this disk has been used for nearly 9 years, the speed should not be as good as the previous new disk.
5.5 Hitachi HDS721616PLA380
Brand: Hitachi
Model: HDS721616PLA380
Hard disk type: 3.5-inch mechanical hard disk Vertical disk
capacity: 160GB
Cache: 8M
Rotation speed: 7200 rpm
Use: 15 years
This disk is a bit old. It has been used for nearly 15 years. In those days, the data storage of this disk was as high as 160GB, and the cache was as high as 8M! It is also a liquid bearing motor
The integration of components was not as good as that of hard disks today. There were a lot of components on the back. The main control chip was from Infineon, which was cached in the main control. There were also additional motor control chips and control circuits.
The speed in USB3.0 mode was as high as 40MB/s.
Let me digress:
this disk has witnessed the development of the times, the development of integrated circuits, the development of hard disk interfaces, the development of personal computers, the development of hard disk capacity, and the continuous decline in prices.
It has also witnessed my growth from childhood to adulthood, from the first and second grades of elementary school to now, when I graduated from college and started working for several years. This hard disk was moved from the old computer in elementary school to the old computer used in junior high school, then to the computer used in college, and then to the new computer now. The motherboard, CPU, memory, chassis and power supply of the computer have all been replaced, but this hard disk is still with me.
This disk also has many memories for me. When I used this disk, I also used the latest SATA power supply + SATA data transmission, so it is also compatible with the current SATA interface.
At that time, solid-state hard drives were not popular. The system was installed on this disk. The fastest boot of the XP system took more than 40 seconds, and the installation of the system had already used 3G. Of course, compared with the current WIN11, it is really a drop in the bucket.
At that time, the Internet speed was not as fast as it is now, with only 100 Mbps and 1 Mbps broadband, which is the speed limit of Baidu Cloud today, or even slower than the speed limit of Baidu Cloud. Moreover, the annual Internet fee was very expensive back then, and I saved all the downloaded files on this 160G hard drive and was reluctant to delete them.
I especially remember that I downloaded more than 10G files in order to play Microsoft Flight Simulator X, and I kept the computer on for several days before I finished downloading.
After downloading, it was still a compressed package, and after decompressing it, it was more than 10G. I saved a lot of things and deleted them in order to play this game.
It brings back a lot of memories.
The environmentally friendly service life of the hard drive is 20 years, and this hard drive can accompany me for another 5 years.
5.6 Colorful SL500
Brand: Colorful
Model: SL500
Hard disk type: TLC solid state hard disk
Capacity: 256GB
Cache: 512M
Usage: two and a half years
Practice time: two and a half years, not too old
USB3.0 can read 350MB/s+, write 300MB/s+,
which is very fast compared with the previous mechanical hard disk
5.7 Samsung 750 EVO
Brand: Samsung
Model: 750 EVO
Hard disk type: TLC solid state hard disk
Capacity: 120GB
Cache: 256M
Usage: 7 years
It is a relatively long disk.
In USB3.0 mode, it writes 300MB/s+, and reads almost 400MB/s, which is better than the miserable red two and a half years above
6. Summary
We have tested many hard drives, including 2.5-inch/3.5-inch mechanical and solid-state drives, which are highly versatile and can reach a maximum reading speed of 400MB/s. It is
simple and practical, with simple peripherals, and 2.5-inch/3.5-inch hard mechanical drives and solid-state drives are universal. Suitable for the hard disk removed from the old computer to make use of the old things.
No need to draw the shell or acrylic, because considering that the sizes of the three disks are different, they cannot be unified, otherwise I have to draw three shells, so I didn’t draw the shell
. There will be a VL plan later, so stay tuned.
