From the Chevrolet Cruze to the Cadillac Escalade, MOST® technology has become the de facto standard for high-bandwidth automotive multimedia networks.

Microchip Technology Inc., a leading global provider of integrated microcontroller, mixed-signal, analog, and flash memory solutions, recently announced that General Motors (GM) has selected Microchip's MOST® (Media Oriented Systems Transport) Intelligent Network Interface Controller (INIC) to manage the network functions of its infotainment systems on its global compact vehicle platforms, including the Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Volt, Opel Astra, Buick Excelle, and Buick Verano. In addition to these GM compact models, this synchronous, flexible, and cost-effective MOST networking technology is widely used across GM's entire vehicle brand across mid-size, large, performance, crossover, SUV, truck, and luxury vehicle platforms.
As a de facto standard for network systems, MOST technology has been adopted by 30 automotive brands and over 204 models worldwide. Markets around the world, including North America, Asia, and Europe, have begun producing vehicles based on MOST technology. Because MOST networks can simultaneously support multiple data types, this allows automakers to offer flexible systems and feature sets for current and future automotive infotainment applications, while also helping to reduce wiring harness weight to better meet environmental regulations.
The Microchip MOST50 INIC used in GM's infotainment network features an optimized electrical physical layer (ePHY) that uses UTP (unshielded twisted pair) copper wiring and complies with stringent automotive EMC standards. The MOST INIC provides industry-standard hardware interfaces for connecting to processors and peripherals, enabling efficient transmission of audio, video, data packets, and control data, thus greatly simplifying module design. With the MOST INIC's ultra-fast network boot capability, end users can instantly access the in-vehicle infotainment system.
Dan Termer, Vice President of Automotive Information Systems at Microchip, stated, “The deployment of MOST technology on GM’s compact vehicle platform further solidifies Microchip’s MOST system solution position in the global automotive market. Beyond the luxury car market, the device has gained recognition and favor across various mass-production automotive platforms, fully demonstrating its superior value. Leveraging the inherent synchronization and intelligent use of network bandwidth of MOST technology, automakers are able to provide cost-effective networking capabilities. Another significant advantage is Microchip’s exceptional system-based application engineering support throughout the platform development process for automakers.”
As a high-speed network technology developed and used by automakers, MOST is gaining increasing recognition in the global market. Recently, MOST Cooperation, the organization responsible for developing and refining the MOST technical specifications, announced the initiation of a process to transfer the MOST specifications to ISO (International Organization for Standardization). This aims to enhance the ease of use of the specifications through an internationally recognized and accredited standardization organization and establish an international standard that meets OEMs' requirements for long-term stability, maintenance, and reliability. This action follows the international principle of continuous development and welcomes the participation of global stakeholders.
