Isolated IGBT Gate Driver Evaluation Platform Reference Design for Three-Phase Inverter Systems

Overview

The TIDA-00195 reference design includes a 22kW power stage and TI's new reinforced isolated IGBT gate driver ISO5852S for motor control in a variety of applications. This design enables performance evaluation of the ISO5852S in a three-phase inverter integrating an IGBT module with a rated voltage of 1200V and a rated current range of 50A-200A.

Some of the important features and performances evaluated include short-circuit protection using DESAT detection, soft shutdown, effectiveness of active Miller clamping at different inverter dv/dt, and IGBT gate driver derived from adjustable speed electrical System-level ESD/EFT performance of electric drive systems (IEC61800-3). Piccolo Launch Pad LAUNCHXL-F28027 is used to generate the PWM signals required for inverter control.

  • ● Three-phase inverter system has:
    • ● IGBT module with rated voltage of 1200V and rated current range of 50A-200A. (Supports multiple vendors)
    • ● 7 reinforced isolated IGBT gate drivers – ISO5852s, operating voltage isolation of 1.5kVrms, minimum CMTI of 50 kV/μs
  • ● Integrated protection functions against overcurrent and false opening, using:
    • ● DESAT test
    • ●Soft shutdown
    • ● Active Miller clamp
  • ● Meet IEC61800-3 EMC immunity requirements:
    • ● +/-8kV ESD CD - per IEC 61000-4-2 standard
    • ● +/-4kV EFT - as per IEC 61000-4-4
  • ● On-board half-bridge isolated power supply that generates +16V/-8V for gate drivers, capable of powering gate drivers from unipolar or bipolar supplies with external BJT/MOSFET buffers
  • ● Configurable gate driver inputs for inverting/non-inverting operation
  • ● You can choose to evaluate the system through the following methods:
    • ● Twisted pair cable between gate driver and IGBT
    • ● External capacitance between gate and emitter
