    The LM388 is a variable DC power supply component, a three-terminal adjustable voltage regulator IC in a TO-220 package that provides a stable output voltage.

    For example, if its output is set to 5V, it will provide a stable 5V output regardless of whether the input voltage fluctuates, but the input voltage must be 2V to 3V higher than the output voltage.

    The configuration of LM338 IC has a pinout of three terminals:

    Input pin: receives DC signal.

    Adjust Pin: Sets/adjusts the desired output voltage.

    Output pin: Generates output voltage, which is filtered by the filter capacitor and sent to the output end of the circuit.

    The circuit below produces an output voltage that can be equal to the input voltage, but the current varies well and cannot exceed 5 A. Resistor R1 is precisely matched to maintain a safe 5A limit current limit that can be obtained from the circuit.

    The circuit below shows a very simple design where a phototransistor replaces a resistor which is used as the component to regulate the output voltage.

    The following circuit shows another circuit with a current limit of 10A, which means that the output can be made suitable for high current rated loads and the voltage can be adjusted as usual via potentiometer R2.
