The circuit diagram below is a simple and inexpensive switching regulator capable of providing an adjustable voltage output range of 1.8V to 32V and a quiescent current of 3A. This voltage regulator uses LM317HV adjustable voltage stabilizing IC and 2N3792 power PNP transistor.

The LM317HV is an adjustable 3-terminal positive voltage regulator capable of delivering over 1.5A over an output range of 1.2V to 57V. This electronic component is very easy to use, requiring only two external resistors to set the output voltage. Additionally, both line and load regulation are superior to standard fixed regulators. Additionally, the LM317HV comes in a standard transistor package for easy installation and handling.
