Rapid engineering prototypes are actual circuits that Maxim application engineers build in the lab and conduct product testing. They are the starting point for new RF engineering designs. They are not intended to be used as assessment testing tools.
Goal: Apply and measure this dual-band three-mode CDMA front-end IC in an IS-136 TDMA receiver, operating at 183MHz IF.
The MAX2338 is designed to implement a single IF in both PCS and cellular band receive channels. Its mixer IP2 performance and other related parameters provide sufficient margin to meet the suppression requirements of CDMA mobile phones for 1/2 IF and other interference. In this circuit, MAX2338 was successfully used in the front-end design of TDMA mobile phones and tested. The purpose of using a universal 183.6MHz IF is to minimize the RF VCO, achieve the smallest number of components and the simplest frequency design.
The MAX2338 low-noise amplifier ( LNA) and mixer is designed for dual-band CDMA cellular handsets. It can also be used in dual-band TDMA, GSM, EDGE or WCDMA applications. The MAX2338 has a divide-by-2 function in the PCS band LO input channel and has only one VCO in the PCS band. The buffered LO output can directly drive the transmit channel upconverter without the need for an external LO buffer. The MAX2338 differs from its predecessors (MAX2320 and MAX2323) by the lower noise figure and higher IIP3 of its LNA and mixer. The MAX2338 also uses a small package (28-QFN).
