DS1802 Stereo Digital Volume Controller
Source: InternetPublisher:rK5jdn Keywords: DS1802 Volume Control Updated: 2026/01/13
The DS1802 is a stereo digital volume control integrated circuit. It consists of two 65-bit, 45kΩ digital potentiometers with logarithmic resistance, increasing by 1dB in each step. It can be operated automatically via a three-wire serial interface under software control, where the slider setting is written with an 8-bit word, or via simple contact closure under push-button control. The component can be used in 3V or 5V environments and operates anywhere within the industrial temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. The DS1802 supports daisy-chaining with other devices under single-processor control.

In addition, the DS1802 has four contact points for button control. When combined with mode control, this allows for eight different button control functions. Secondly, the DS1802's potentiometers can be controlled individually or in stereo mode control, where the sliders of two potentiometers are positioned together from a single control input.
The DS1802 provides high-performance audio volume and tone control in most applications that use mechanical potentiometers, including CD players, guitar amplifiers, and sound cards. The digital potentiometer consumes very little power while providing digital accuracy and reliability under flexible, automated processor control.
The DS1802 chip costs only a few dollars and requires no CPU! Its unique feature is the use of simple up/down/mute buttons. It's very easy for DIY enthusiasts to handle. Furthermore, the chip is manufactured in DIP format, making it convenient for those of us who prefer point-to-point wiring.
I think if you need 5.1 channels, you can combine three of these chips together and connect the buttons in a purely linear or parallel manner. As long as they all power on at the same "cold" boot time, they will remain synchronized.
