5 Misconceptions about Using Anti-static Shielding Bags


Anti-static shielding bags are commonly used to package electronic components to prevent damage caused by electrostatic discharge. Understanding how to use anti-static shielding bags correctly is crucial. This article summarizes five tips that may help you use them correctly.

Ideally, the anti-static shielding bag should be large enough to seal the entire product inside .


The shielding bag should be sealed with a label or tape, or a zippered shielding bag can be used. Placing ESD -sensitive electronic components in an anti-static shielding bag is the only way to protect them from electrostatic discharge. An unsealed anti-static shielding bag cannot provide complete anti-static protection!

Dissipate the charge on the anti-static shield.


When receiving ESD- sensitive components sealed in shielding bags , remember to always place the closed shielding bag on an anti-static work surface before removing the product. This will help dissipate any charge that may have accumulated on the surface of the shielding bag.

Do not overuse shielding bags.


If the shielding bag is not damaged, it can basically be reused. However, if there are any tears, rips or excessive wrinkles on the shielding bag ( as shown below ) , such shielding bags should be discarded.

A shielding bag is not an ESD workbench.

Please remember : Anti-static shielding bags are only for protecting ESD sensitive products from static damage. If you are handling ESD sensitive products, please use a properly grounded ESD workbench.

Do not use shielding bags to handle ESD sensitive products.


Do not use shielding bags as "ESD heat mats " or "ESD gloves " when handling ESD- sensitive products, as the bags do not provide any ESD protection to the products. Always wear a wired wrist strap or heel strap to ground your shoes when handling ESD- sensitive devices.
