Combining a photodiode, two operational amplifiers, and a comparator ( Figure 1 ) creates a fiber optic communications receiver capable of 800kbps data rates. The compact package (the op amp is in a 5-pin SOT23 package and the comparator is in an 8-pin µMAX® package) allows the PCB or thick film substrate area to be made very small.
Figure 1. Two op amps and a comparator form a tiny photodiode receiver with data rates up to 800kbps.
The photodiode operates in the photoconductive mode and generates a signal voltage at the input end of IC1. The transimpedance gain is equal to the value of R2 (here 4700Ω). The op amps (IC1 and IC2) are connected to a non-inverting gain of about 25V/V. amplifier. So the total transimpedance gain of the circuit is close to 3MΩ: 4700Ω × 25 × 25 = 2.99MΩ. The gain bandwidth of the op amp determines the maximum available data rate of 800kbps.
