Single-channel buck converter can drive projector's RGB LEDs by simply adding three power MOSFETs

Overview

introduction

This application note provides a reference design for a low-power projector RGB LED driver. A high-current LED driver based on the single-chip MAX16821 can provide up to 10A current for a set of buck-driven RGB LEDs with an on/off time of less than 1µs. Only one color LED is driven at a certain time, and RGB shares the PWM cycle in proportion.

LED driver technical specifications

  • Input supply voltage: 10V to 15V

  • LED driving current: 10A

  • LED forward bias: 4.5V to 6V

  • LED current rise/fall time: < 1µs

  • LED current ripple: 10% peak to peak, maximum
